Tips To Organize Your Laundry Room
We would all love to have a laundry room as organized and beautiful as this……
Most people dislike doing laundry and tell me that their laundry room is one of the hardest places to keep organized in their home. Let’s face it, not only is it a generally unpleasant chore, but it’s also performed in a space which is usually low on our list of priorities in terms of decorating.
In our previous home the laundry room was located in our dreary, unfinished, cold and damp basement requiring me to lug laundry baskets up and down the stairs. When you have a family of four there’s usually a lot of laundry to do. In our current home our laundry room is situated on the top floor which I absolutely love. It makes you wonder why home builders didn’t think of this before!
If your laundry room is not there yet (mine certainly is not) or is not located on the main or top floor of your home, there are several things you can do to simplify and organize your laundry and make this chore more pleasant and efficient. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Make a critical review of all the cleaning supplies in your laundry room. What do you really use? Discard anything that you no longer use, don’t like or has expired. Remember also to dispose of your cleaning supplies in an environmentally friendly manner. Please don’t just wash this stuff down the drain. Unless you are using environmentally friendly products, check your with your local municipality on safe disposal.
- Think vertical and use as much wall space as you can to install cabinets, shelves, hooks, rods and other accessories that can serve to expand your space.
- If you happen to buy your laundry products in bulk from big box stores think about keeping the unopened larger containers on a separate shelf and transfer the product to small bottles you can keep within easy reach for ease of use.
- Use mesh laundry bags to keep small things together such as kid’s socks and underwear, lingerie, etc.
- Keep a small container or basket within reach to collect pocket change and other miscellaneous items found in pockets.
- Keep a supply of hangers in the laundry room for easy “washer to hanger” action.
- Hang your ironing board out of the way and off the floor by installing an over-the-door storage rack. Many of these also have a place for your iron as well.Don’t forget that a simple coat of paint is like a liquid renovator. It can do wonders to make your space more appealing. I should probably take my own advice and paint my laundry room!
