Organizing Your Garage

Remember when a garage was somewhere to store your car in the winter so you wouldn’t have to clear off the snow before driving away?  These days with most people utilizing their garages for everything but the family vehicle the idea of getting your car into the garage stands anywhere between “remote” and “impossible”.  So what better time than now to start thinking about getting your garage de-cluttered and organized for the approaching fall & winter season. I don’t just talk about it, I am about it. To prove this I set out to get my own garage organized.

Our single car garage is used for everything from winter tire storage, gardening, automotive, trash removal as well as seasonal storage and sports gear. Here’s a photo of our garage before I got started with my husband acting as my assistant. (And yes, we are still married after working on this project together!)  I had already cleared out quite a bit of stuff but there was still more de-cluttering and organizing to be done. Plus, I wasn’t happy with the current set up and was looking for an inexpensive improvement.

Cluttered Garage Before Organizing

I detest clearing snow off my car in the winter so my goal was to get my car in this space. We replaced the wooden shelving (which is not a good idea for garages due to the moisture and potential mold and rot issue) with heavy duty resin shelving and also used floating shelf brackets for blue box storage and organization. After setting aside items for donation and trash we were able to organize the garage using the new shelving unit and newly acquired brackets and hooks to hang items mostly on one side of the garage.  Here is our garage once we completed the improvements.

I’m very pleased with the end result and thrilled that my car can now fit right into the garage with ample room for me to maneuver. I’m not parking in there at the moment, but you can bet your booty I will be come November!
